Back to Gardens I Have Visited Page NJ Botanical Gardens and Skyland ManorMy family and I have been to the New Jersey Botanical Gardens several times and we toured Skyland once. These gardens are entirely different in the spring and summer. It's been a great place to get ideas for my flower designs. NJ Botanical Garden in SpringThis past spring, we went to the NJ Botanical Garden during Lilac Weekend which is the first week in May which also happened to be Mother's Day weekend. They have an entire section with lilac bushes of many different types. This couple is enjoying one of the beautiful lilac bushes.
Here are two varieties of lilacs.
Besides the lilacs, there were many beautiful azalea bushes. Much to our surprise, we saw the first tiger swallowtail butterfly landing on one of the azalea bushes. My son and I both ran down the hill to photograph it. Luckily we didn't trip and, of course, the important thing was that we got the shot.
Here are some other flowers that we found at Skyland in the spring.
NJ Botanical Garden in SummerSkyland is totally different in summer. All the flowering trees and bushes and now just green but all the summer flowers are out. There are benches for people to sit and enjoy the flowers and open grassy areas where people like to picnic. The flowers in the Annual Garden change from season to season and year to year.
One of the attractions of the NJ Botanical Garden is Skyland Manor which is open for tours in the summers for an extra fee. It is also available for weddings. While we were taking our tour, a girl taking the tour had booked a wedding asking the guide about where various parts of her wedding would take place. This is one of view of Skyland Manor.
On the east side of the manor house begins the Terrace Garden which is a series of five terraces. Here are some photos of these terraces.
While we were there, we saw a beauty queen having a photo shoot. The Skyland Gardens make a beautiful background for photographs.
