Back to Gardens I Have Visited Page Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic ParkWe went to Planting Fields Arboretum in Long Island at the beginning of October. Because it was late in the season, I was afraid that there wouldn't be any flowers there but figured that since they have a Main Greenhouse and a Camellia Greenhouse, there would be at least something to look at. I was pleasantly surprised and we hade a great day. Here's the entrance to Planting Fields. Because it was autumn, they had a big display of pumpkins and gourds (big in both number and size).
This is the entrance to the Main Greenhouse
Some photos inside the Main Greenhouse
Camellia Greenhouse We also went into the Camellia Greenhouse but unfortunately, most of the trees hadn't bloomed yet and there were only a few flowers. Camellias actually bloom in the winter.
I was able to take a few camellia photos.
This flower is called "Cape Leadwort"
Coe Hall Coe Hall is one of the original historic estate buildings that remain. It is open for tours spring through fall although we didn't get a chance to tour it. Weddings can be booked there.
While we were walking around Coe Hall we saw wedding pictures being taken. The bride and bridesmaids must have been cold, but I'm sure her pictures were beautiful.
Child's Playhouse A very cute little building at Planting Fields was this child's playhouse.
Dahlia Garden and Dahlia Show My biggest surprise, considering it was the beginning of October was that the dahlias were still in bloom in the Dahlia Garden. Another pleasant surprise was that the Mid Island Dahlia Society was having their Dahlia Show the day we were there. Some photos from the Paul Callahan Dahlia Garden
Mid Island Dahlia Show Until I saw this show, I didn't know there was so much interest in dahlias. From some of the conversations I overheard, growing very large dahlias seemed to be one of the goals. I heard one man tell another, "You call yourself a dahlia grower and you don't even have a ruler on you."
