Back to Gardens I Have Visited Page Grounds for Sculpture18 Fairgrounds Road Grounds for Sculpture is a combination of garden and musuem. As you walk around the grounds you unexpectedly come across various sculptures. One of the things Grounds of Sculpture is well known for are the sculptures by J. Seward Johnson that are based on famous paintings. There is also an indoor musuem with changing exhibitions. We visited at the end of April. By the Pond In my opinion, the prettiest area at Grounds for Sculpture is around the restaurant Rats (the name is based on the character Ratty in the book "Winds in the Willow" who represented everything a host should be). Weddings can be catered at Rats and while we were there we saw a bridal party having photos taken
The area around the restaurant is based on Monet's painting "Water Lilies" Actually there was an entire series of paintings with the water lily theme painted under different condition. To reproduce this, Grounds for Sculpture has a machine that shoots out mist. Here are some photos around this area.
Sculptures based on Famous Paintings - Sculptor: J. Seward Johnson Here are some of the sculptures that are based on famous paintings. On the left is the sculpture and on the right is the painting that is based on. This painting is called "Two Sisters on the Terrace" by August Renoir. What is most interesting about Grounds for Sculpture is that you come upon these sculpture unexpectedly. This statue is casually sitting at the cafe amoung the other diners.

The next painting is called "The Luncheon of the Boating Party" also by August Renoir.

Museum Grounds for Sculpture has an indoor musuem which has changing exhibits. While we were there, there was an exhibit of moving sculptures.
The day that we visited Grounds for Sculpture, the exhibit the musuem was featuring movable sculpture.
Watch Out for These As we were driving home we were surpirsed to see some sculptures along the road. I don't know if there just wasn't room for them inside Grounds for Sculpture or just an added little treat for those who are observant. I don't know how many others there are.
